Reflecting on the past, present and future of the Nama and Herero genocide!

140 years ago, Western rulers laid down their rules for the colonisation of the continent at the ‘Berlin Conference’ and yet the consequences and legacy of #colonialism are affecting us to date!

The public dialogues series “Trilogy to Remembrance” marked a significant milestone in raising awareness and educating Namibia’s youth about the 1904 – 1908 OvaHerero and Nama #genocide. It served as a reminder of the power of dialogue in confronting historical injustices, fostering mutual understanding, and charting a shared path towards a more inclusive future.

The Herero and Nama genocide is defined as a moral and legal crime. Therefore, there is a need to revisit the dialogue between Namibia and Germany at community and people-to-people levels. These dialogues are imperative for #reconciliation and strengthening the bond between Namibia and Germany.

  • To meaningfully address #reconciliation Germany should develop a moral construction framework and a cultural initiative that celebrates diversity, contributing to lasting peace and partnership between the two nations.
  • Internal conflicts within the affected communities must be resolved to ensure unity and smooth implementation once the agreement is finalised. However, there are concerns about maintaining momentum on the Namibian-German reconciliation process under a new leadership.

These were notions at the dialogue’s series, organised by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung #Namibia in partnership with #NID.
